The official Kick-Off Party at CineCity Studios set the stage for what promises to be the most exciting edition yet of North America’s longest-running Latino film festival.
There is a particular electricity that fills a room when filmmakers, journalists, community leaders, and cinema lovers all gather under one roof with a shared sense of anticipation. That’s exactly what happened last week at CineCity Studios in Chicago, when the International Latino Cultural Center of Chicago (ILCC) officially launched the countdown to the 42nd Chicago Latino Film Festival — and made clear that this April is going to be something special.
The Kick-Off Party brought together a lively mix of festival stakeholders, ILCC members, and members of the press for an evening that was part preview, part celebration, and entirely Chicago Latino Film Festival in spirit. Cocktails flowed, conversations buzzed, and the energy in the room left little doubt: the festival faithful are ready.
During the event, the Opening Night and Closing Night films still anchor the Festival but in a different way in 2026. With all the is going on in the world right now, the Festival has opted to scale down the Gala experience and offer a more intimate setting at the Landmark Century Cinemas. This is a more precise way to celebrate the films, the art and bring filmmakers and audience together in a unique mingling experience. Ticket prices for the Opening and Closing events have also been restructured from $75 to $35 dollars, giving attendees a much more accessible access point. The ticket includes the reception with some food, cash bar and network mingling with festival stakeholders, actors and filmmakers.
A Vision from the Top
The evening’s centerpiece was a special presentation by Pepe Vargas, the founder of the Chicago Latino Film Festival, alongside Deputy Executive Director Mateo Mulcahy — the two driving forces, enjoined by a dedicated team of professionals behind one of the most enduring cultural institutions in the Midwest.
Vargas, who has shepherded this festival from its founding in 1985 through four decades of growth and transformation, brought his trademark passion and perspective to the night, offering guests an inside look at what the 42nd edition has in store. His message was clear: after more than 40 years, the festival’s mission — to give Latino cinema a platform worthy of its talent — has never felt more urgent or more alive.
Mulcahy, whose operational vision and creative energy have helped modernize the festival’s reach and presence, added detail and depth to the preview, giving attendees a taste of the remarkable lineup taking shape at the Landmark Century Center this April.
Latino Cinema as a Mirror — Then and Now
One of the most powerful conversations at the Kick-Off, and one that runs like a current through this year’s entire lineup, is how dramatically Latino cinema has evolved as a storytelling force. What began in earlier decades largely as genre fare or regional melodrama has matured into a sophisticated, world-class body of work that refuses to look away from the contradictions, struggles, and triumphs that define Latin American life — past and present.
Today’s Latino filmmakers are increasingly making movies about reality — often the most uncomfortable parts of it. And each country represented at the festival brings its own voice, its own wounds, and its own genius to that task. That said, the CLFF has never been a festival of austerity. There is still plenty of room — and genuine joy — in films designed to lift us out of the everyday and carry us somewhere altogether different. This year’s lineup includes animated works that open doors to magical worlds of pure imagination, and comedies that use laughter as a lens, finding the absurd and the tender in subjects that could just as easily break your heart. Latino storytelling has always known that humor and wonder are not escapes from truth — they are simply other paths toward it.
This year’s lineup makes that full range impossible to ignore.
From Argentina comes Homo Argentum, the wickedly funny satirical anthology from directors Gastón Duprat and Mariano Cohn, starring the beloved Guillermo Francella. On the surface a comedy, the film is really a sharp and affectionate autopsy of Argentine male identity — the pride, the contradictions, the philosophical posturing, and the very human insecurities underneath. It laughs loudly and lovingly at a culture that has always taken itself very seriously, and in doing so tells us more about who Argentines are than any documentary could.
From Paraguay comes something far more sobering. Bajo las banderas, el sol (Under the Flags, the Sun), directed by Juanjo Pereira and premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival, is an extraordinary archival documentary built from over 120 hours of recovered footage — newsreels, propaganda films, and declassified documents — that lays bare the 35-year dictatorship of Alfredo Stroessner, one of the longest-running authoritarian regimes in Latin American history. What makes the film all the more chilling is what its own director discovered in the making of it: he thought he was excavating the past, only to realize he was describing the present. The descendants of the regime’s leaders still hold power in Paraguay today. As a document of how dictatorships construct mythology, control memory, and outlast themselves, it is essential viewing — and a stark reminder that authoritarianism is always, without exception, on the wrong side of history.
And from Guatemala comes the internationally acclaimed Cordillera de Fuego, the fifth feature from visionary director Jayro Bustamante and a Premios Platino nominee for Best Ibero-American Film. When a new volcano begins forming near an indigenous community, it brings the promise of economic opportunity — but also the threat of displacement and destruction. At the center of the story is a vulcanologist, played by María Mercedes Coroy, who must fight through layers of institutional corruption and bureaucratic indifference to protect the people most at risk. It is a film about what happens when greed and systemic failure collide — and who always pays the price. Spoiler: it is never the powerful.
Three films. Three countries. Three utterly different approaches to the same essential question: What does it mean to be who we are — and what will we do about it? And the rest of the lineup — nearly 100 films in all — answers that question in just as many ways.
