María (dancer Janet Novás, winner of Breakthrough Performance by an Actress at the Goya Awards this year), a local shellfish catcher and midwife, gets into trouble when she helps a teen abort her child with disastrous consequences. María has no choice but to flee her country. Aided by a strong network of women who defy the law as she makes her way to Portugal, María begins to wonder if she, herself, wants to become a mother.
