Winner of the Golden Shell for Best Picture at last year’s San Sebastian Film Festival, Camborda’s film takes place in the Galician countryside in the early 70s, at the tail end of Franco’s regime. María (dancer Janet Novás, winner of Breakthrough Performance by an Actress at the Goya Awards this year), a local shellfish catcher and midwife, gets into trouble when she helps a teen abort her child with disastrous consequences. María has no choice but to flee her country. Aided by a strong network of women who defy the law as she makes her way to Portugal, María begins to wonder if she, herself, wants to become a mother.
