Fenómenos Naturales • Winner of the Best First Feature award at the Guadalajara International Film Festival’s Iberoamerican Feature Competition, Díaz Sosa’s adaptation of his 2016 short tells the story of Vilma, a young pregnant nurse who lives in a small town near Santa Clara, Cuba in the late 80s, who is barred from entering the national skeet shooting competition. Then, one day, like Dorothy in “The Wizard of Oz,” a strange tornado whisks her to the island hosting the tournament. Like Dorothy, Vilma will find that there is, indeed, no place like home, even if that home happens to be a ramshackle farm in a country that is rapidly deteriorating.
